Summary/ Abstract:The Generationennetzwerk Umwelt (GNU) (Network of Generations for the Environment) promotes 8 learning workshops in which intergenerational approaches in the field of environment are developed.
The focus lies on the involvement of older adults as volunteers, who develop within the supporting programm of the environmental organisations propositions for children and young people.
The Projektebüro as a youth welfare institution goes after initiatives which take place in the context of schools.
The workshops promoted by the Projektebüro do focus on three topics
1. Concept of the Garden for All Generations
2. The use of Rainwater in order to discharge to public water supply
3. Development of intergenerational education approaches for the educational programm of a botanical garden
Background (reason, initiative?):The menace to the environment is a topic of concern to all generations. The Projektebüro includes this topic since years in the trainings for the projects. The participation in GNU gives us the opportunity of textual completion of our engagement in the filed.
The responsible body for the programm “Generationennetzwerk Umwelt” (www.generationennetzwerk.de) is the Institut für Entwicklungsplanung und Strukturforschung - IES ( Institute for Developmental Planning and of Structural Research) at the University in Hannover (www.ies.uni-hannover.de)
objectives:Development of intergenerational educational programmes on environment
Stimulation of discussions on environmental concerns in public
target groups:Older adults, young people, schools (teachers and pupils), environmental associations, voluntary agencies, senior organisations, municipal partners
setting (family. open space, school, home, others):educational programmes in senior and environmental organisations
methods of intergenerational learning/ dialogue:Development of concepts for the use of public gardens or urban waste land in the responsibility of all generations respectively generationgroups
2. Exploration of the local public water management and working out a concept of alternative water supply. The young team of “watercollecters” is supported by their school, the staff members of the NABU (“Naturschutzbund Deutschland” German Association for Nature Protection) and olders adults (an intergenerational living and housing group, multipliers in the work with older adults) for counselling, practical application and dissimination of the results.
3. A big foundation did invest in an intergenerational research project at the Freitalgymansium nearby Dresden. The acquired findings and the experiences of the young researchers on the determination of the storage of harmfull substances in trees (Project “Baumguards” treeguards) did win a price on national competition “Jugend forscht” (Youth does research). The aim is now to develop together with older adults of the Seniorenakademie in Dresden a module for the educational programm of the botanical garden Tharandt / Dresden.
difficulties and ways of transition:1. The Troubles of the Plains: you need a lot of time and patience to find partners in the municipality, in the schools, the seniororganisations, in the neighbourhood and to keep the process going forward
2. not known
3. difficulties in funding the futher development of the project
Does the project relate trainings of persons involved? (Discription):not yet
successful experiences:the good responses to the workshops do attest the big interest in these approaches
extension of the project/ initiative:local
funding:The Generationennetzwerk Umwelt (GNU) (Network of Generations for the Environment) is promoted by the Deutsche Bundesstiftung für Umwelt (German Federal Foundation for the Environment)in co-financiation by the participating organisations
